This was the beginning of the transformation from a small fishing village to a first tourist destination and laid the foundation for its subsequent growth and prosperity today.

20% of Thailands GDP from Pattaya’s tourism?
Tourism as a whole contributed around 14-18% to Thailand’s GDP before the pandemic. Although the exact figures for Pattaya alone are difficult to determine, its share is significant. Some statisticians even believe that nowadays more than 20% of GDP comes from the Pattaya region.
To summarise, Pattaya is a major driver of the Thai economy, mainly through tourism, job creation and attracting investment. Its development and success have a direct and indirect impact on the economic well-being of the country.

This results in an average revenue per tourist of around 47,600 baht for the entire stay in the country. This figure includes all spending throughout the country, not just in Pattaya.
Statisticians clearly state that a Pattaya holidaymaker spends significantly more than the average traveller to Thailand. Market research indicates that 30% more is spent in Pattaya than in Chiang Mai, for example…

The whole area pulsates with a vibrant nightlife, while offering beautiful beaches and a growing selection of family attractions. From bustling markets to tranquil temples, Pattaya uniquely combines relaxation and entertainment. A dynamic place with many facets. The nightlife is legendary and spectacular.
Is the wild playground for blokes becoming a kind of entertainment industry funfair?
Maybe. Whereas in the past it was mainly men who trotted through the famous Walking Street, nowadays you also see many women who at least want to take a look at the scene. Often even hand in hand with their husbands or boyfriends.
Pattaya, probably the most famous entertainment city in Asia, attracts millions of visitors every year from all over the world who come to experience the infamous and exciting nightlife. The famous Walking Street pulsates after sunset with countless bars, clubs and entertainment options.
Other attractions sand, beaches and warm temperatures:

Thailand’s cuisine enchants with a harmonious balance of sweet, sour, salty and spicy flavours. Fresh herbs such as lemongrass and coriander, fiery chillies and creamy coconut milk characterise the variety. Every bite is a flavour experience.

Communication in English is still a problem in 2025
Even better hotels have deficits in the language skills of their staff.
At best, the modest English skills of many Thais can be mentioned if you want to criticise them. Not much has improved since the author’s first trip to Thailand in 1996. In the little-visited north-east of Thailand, it was even extremely difficult to find a Thai with a good command of English.
Pattaya: is the metropolis also suitable for families with children?
Yes, Pattaya can definitely be suitable for families with children. Away from the well-known nightlife, the city offers numerous family-friendly attractions such as water parks (Columbia Pictures Aquaverse, Ramayana), theme parks (Mini Siam), animal experiences (Sanctuary of Truth, Pattaya Sheep Farm, Underwater World) and much more.
There are also beautiful gardens (Nong Nooch). Quieter beach areas such as Jomtien, Naklua and Wong Amat are ideal for families. Many resorts offer children’s clubs and special family offers. With the right planning, families can enjoy a varied and entertaining holiday in Pattaya.
Is Pattaya’s south coast worth a visit?
For those who want to take it a little easier. The south coast of Pattaya offers a more relaxed atmosphere and some quieter beaches compared to the centre. There are also interesting attractions and good restaurants.
Those who prefer a more tranquil pace will find places worth visiting here. The cheap option of renting a 125cc scooter for around 5 euros per day is ideal. However, you drive on the left in Thailand and the hustle and bustle is not everyone’s cup of tea. Fuel is not expensive here, compared with the prices in US or Europe. A liter of petrol in May 2025 is less than 1 $.
